Jack didn't show up for Senior yearbook pictures in Aug. of '68. A number of my friends didn't...hair and dress codes, etc. He did indeed graduate in '69, but more than likely didn't show up for the graduation ceremony, and probably never bothered to pick up his diploma. Went to SMS all three years. His full name is Jack Dennis Allen, and for whatever reason, he went by Dennis as of '68...that's why some in '68 who shared classes with him remember him as Dennis. They also remember him as incredibly funny. Everyone, even the teachers in class, would laugh their asses off when Jack would deliver the perfect joke at just the right/wrong time. Legend has it that when he got on a roll, the teachers would finally just give up, sit back, and laugh along with everyone else!
I met Jack thru another friend before I transferred to SMS in '67 for my Junior year. He was not only the funniest person I ever met (Sam Kinison told him as much, years later), but he was a great artist...painted one of my guitars with a psychedelic design in day-glow colors...wish I still had it! He was also a brilliant producer and sound man, doing the mix for Blue Riddim, including the Grammy-nominated album "Blue Riddim at Reggae Sunsplash Festival, 1982". Plus, he was just smart as a whip, period. One of my best friends ever, I miss him every day. I haven't even scratched the surface about this guy... truly one of the most exceptional people I've ever known. Anyone who knew him or had an encounter with him would NEVER forget it...he was that kind of personality!
Jack Dennis Allen passed on Feb. 9th, 2002 in Overland Park. His wife preceded him in death. The funeral was at Newcomers on 82nd and Metcalf a few days later, certainly within the week. His two daughters were there for the memorial. I recall seeing an obit in the KC Star at the time, and I'm sure it's available somewhere.

Jack was quite a character. He had a 62-63 Chevy II convertible.  He removed all the labels on the switches for the controls, and used a Dynamo Label maker to create Batman inspired labels.  The windshield wipers became anti-percipitation device.  The lights became anti-night illumination device.  That was Jack.

When I read that Jack Allen had passed away It broke my heart.   I was with him a lot during  the end of my junior year  most of my senior.  I too was one of the rebels that didn't have my picture taken in my Junior year.    I bet Jack had something to do with that decsion.      I don't remember a lot of people but Jack is one I would never forget.  It sounds like he had a great life.. I am so so Sorry he isn't with us anymore.
