Betty and I reconnected on Facebook, almost by accident, during what turned out to be the last decade of her life. Betty had retired and was living in Florida; she subsequently moved to North Carolina, and finally to Virginia to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
During those years, Betty saw her daughter get married and become a mother to two little boys, and her son graduate from law school. She took great pride in everything they did and posted pictures frequently. She loved being a grandmother. By that time, Betty had traded in her cello for choral music and sang in several ensembles in Florida and North Carolina.
Betty died of cancer in the spring of 2022 (I was remiss in not sharing this news at the time) after a very brave fight. She ultimately decided to forego further treatment and entered hospice care in her final days. She showed great strength and courage throughout.
