Jim was a good friend in High School and we stayed in touch in the years following. After I was appointed to Texas State University, he wrote me an email asking to audit one of my online classes. Of course, I let him join. It was a course on World Conflict and International Relations Theory and he thoroughly enjoyed doing the weekly readings and essays.

It was with great sadness that I got the email from John Liddell, the other of the three of us running-mates, that Jim had died over night while sleeping.

I have yet to meet his lovely wife, Klissa, but when we next get to Arizona, we will work to get together.

Jim and I go back to Catholic grade school. I can't say I was a close friend, but I always admired him for both his intelligence and steely resolve in the face of bullies who taunted him over his disabilities. I'm so glad he found love and happiness in his life and was able to return it in kind. The paragraph at the end of his obit says it all... "In lieu of flowers or donations, please go home, hug your spouse and kids, mend a broken friendship, do something nice for a friend and try every day to make the world a better place".

I knew Jim since 1966. He was an avid wargamer and we played board games until computer games became available. We played online once that became available and we played and talked with friends as far away as New York. He was my best friend and even his wife, Klissa, would play games with us. We would play several times a week in the daytime and several times a week at night. He had been feeling bad for some time before he passed away and I was very sorry to hear that he was gone. Since then my wife and father have also passed away and it is a rather lonely existence. Jim kept up on current affairs and we had many lively discussions on almost any topic you could imagine. He is greatly missed.

Jim was a brilliant student that was so willing to help me with the math in chemistry. He was so patient in helping me try to understand the concepts & he was the reason I was able to pass chemistry.  He would come over to my house & we played a few games as well.  Right after he got his driver’s license, he was taking me to see Bonnie & Clyde in his Dodge Dart. We were at a stop sign with a hill to our right. He checked traffic and pulled out to cross the road when a little VW Carmengia came over the hill at well over the 25 mph speed limit and t-boned the Dart. It spun us around 180 degrees and we ended up in the front lawn close to the house. Thank goodness we weren’t badly injured.  I was saddened to hear of his passing. He was a really great guy. He always had a smile and was fun to be around.
