I didn't know Bruce well, but I think he was another one of us who was in Hoobing's Unified Studies class in the 7th grade at Nallwood JH.  I remember him as a fine student and friendly person.  I'm sorry to hear of his death.

I remember when I returned to Kansas City in 1992 for my father-in-law's funeral, we decided to check-in to a hotel on Metcalf.  Bruce was there at the front desk.  We laughed & hugged. I introduced him to my husband & children, & he told me all about his life partner. I told him that (at that time) I was a RN Trauma Charge Nurse at Parkland, about the Delta 191 crash in 1985, & the 60 Minutes filming at Parkland ER with Dan Rather.  He told me all about his awesome experiences in the Hospitality field that he loved.  We laughed & hugged some more. Bruce looked so happy, & it was wonderful seeing him, even under those circumstances. I can honestly say Bruce Balliett was one of the nicest, gentlest, & kindest souls I will ever have the good fortune to know. The world will be a little less bright with his passing.

Gail Johnson summed up Bruce very well.  Bruce and I sat near each other in homeroom and he was a very pleasant person to encounter at the beginning of each day.  He was also very thoughtful and a good listener.  I remarked one morning that I might be looking for a new piano teacher.  I meant 'someday,' but Bruce took my remark seriously and the next day produced contact information for his piano teacher and told me that the teacher would be expecting my call!  I am sorry to say we lost contact after SMS graduation; I would have enjoyed continuing our homeroom friendship.

Bruce & I had Spanish together at KU. When he inherited his grandmother's house on 85th St. it was just a few houses from my parents' house so I saw him occasionally. He was a great guy.

Gail expressed Bruce’s genuine warmth and friendliness so well! Bruce, Doug, his partner and I had a great visit at, perhaps our thirtieth reunion? He introduced me to his partner, and we had a lovely visit, primarily about travel and places we’d both enjoyed! I came away from the visit grinning ear to ear! What a friendly, genuine individual, full of exuberance! I’m sad that Bruce died too young, and that I won’t get to visit with him at our thirtieth.

I thought of Bruce tonight at my ham radio club meeting when we were talking about ham antennas in attics. In 7th grade, my dad and I went over to his house to help his dad put an antenna in their attic and I had to crawl on the ceiling joists to get it in place. Problem was the antenna was too close to the chandelier in the entry and as soon as his dad transmitted it caused the light to glow and Bruce thought we had caught the wiring on fire or something.
